Los Angeles, California: phased basement demolition and deep shoring near Metro tunnels used soldier piles, tiebacks, and preloaded rakers.
A basement at a tight city boundary, a hospital retaining wall, and a utility excavation on a larger development need different structural support. Cefali & Associates provides earth shoring and specialty structural engineering for California projects, with offices in Los Angeles and Pleasant Hill.
Our work focuses on excavations, retaining structures, and difficult foundation conditions. Soldier piles, tiebacks, soil nails, rakers, and internal bracing are designed around the site investigation, surrounding loads, and room available for construction. We provide engineering; the contractor installs the support.
Excavation and construction
Documented work ranges from deep basements near Los Angeles Metro tunnels to a permanent tied-back hospital wall in Newport Beach and top-down soil nail walls in Corona. Those are different support problems, with different ground criteria and property constraints.
For projects in Long Beach, Pasadena, the San Fernando Valley, Anaheim, Irvine, Riverside, or San Bernardino, the excavation geometry matters more than a regional label. An anchor may extend beyond the site, a brace may cross a future basement slab, and construction equipment may load the wall before the permanent structure exists.
Excavation and construction
A hillside basement can combine temporary excavation support with permanent retaining work at several elevations. On a narrower urban parcel, neighboring foundations and limited drilling access may control the layout instead. Neither condition can be resolved by choosing a wall from a regional map.
San Diego County, Ventura and Oxnard, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and Salinas, and Santa Cruz projects can be discussed through our California engineering team. The site-specific geotechnical recommendations establish the ground criteria; structural shoring addresses the proposed excavation and retained loads.
Excavation and construction
The Pleasant Hill office supports Northern California inquiries, including San Francisco, Oakland and the East Bay, San Jose and the Peninsula, the North Bay, and Sacramento. Existing basements, transit structures, public frontage, and groundwater can each change the support arrangement.
An excavation near an operating facility needs the actual foundation and utility positions. A pile or anchor layout has to fit around those assets while preserving construction access. Where groundwater requires temporary control, the support design and water-control approach need compatible assumptions.
Excavation and construction
An equipment pit, utility structure, or retaining-wall footing can need local excavation support even when most of a development remains at grade. On Central Valley projects from Stockton and Modesto through Fresno and Bakersfield, the cut still has to account for nearby foundations, equipment loads, and the space needed to install the permanent work.
Imperial Valley, high desert, and North State projects need the same site-specific approach to the structural assignment. A site in Chico, Redding, or Eureka cannot be assigned a support system from its city name. The proposed cut and ground investigation establish the conditions the design must address.
Comparable California projects
These documented projects show the engineering and construction conditions. Each example identifies its actual location.

Los Angeles, California: phased basement demolition and deep shoring near Metro tunnels used soldier piles, tiebacks, and preloaded rakers.

Newport Beach, California: a permanent tied-back soldier pile wall approximately 50 feet high addressed groundwater, property limits, and an existing methane gas well.

Corona, California: top-down soil nail walls transitioned to soldier piles where nail easements were unavailable.
Engineering scope
A concept for bidding, detailed drawings and calculations, and engineering for construction-stage changes can be separate assignments. The proposal identifies the services included. Geotechnical assessment, water-control design, property rights, and contractor installation remain distinct responsibilities.
