Shoring and excavation support

Temporary shoring engineering in Modesto

Discuss your project

A building addition in Modesto may need a short, deep cut beside an existing footing while the rest of the site stays at grade. A new retaining wall can also require temporary support behind its eventual position. Cefali & Associates designs earth shoring for these localized excavations as well as larger basements.

The depth, nearby loads, and access for installing the support establish the assignment. A large site does not necessarily provide usable space beside the particular cut.

Excavation and construction

An addition can change support beside an existing building

Modesto’s planning resources include a Downtown Master Plan and separate corridor studies. For renovation or infill within an established block, the relevant structural condition is the relationship between the new excavation and what stays in place: footings, slabs, utility runs, and access to the building.

Removing soil beside an existing footing can change its support before the addition is built. Cefali’s shoring design addresses the retained cut and applicable foundation loads using project-specific geotechnical recommendations. Where an existing foundation itself needs support, underpinning is evaluated as a distinct scope.

Excavation and construction

The temporary cut behind a permanent retaining wall

The excavation for a wall footing and drainage can extend farther into the site than the finished wall face. Temporary support must function before the wall and backfill can carry earth loads. Nails or anchors may need off-site rights even when the permanent wall does not cross the boundary.

At Vista Monterey in Corona, Cefali’s soil nail walls transitioned to soldier piles where nail easements were unavailable. A Modesto retaining project needs its own geometry and ground criteria, but the same distinction between a finished wall and the space needed to construct it is useful early in design.

Engineering scope

From a support concept to structural details.

A concept for bidding, detailed drawings and calculations, and engineering for construction-stage changes can be separate assignments. The proposal identifies the services included. Geotechnical assessment, water-control design, property rights, and contractor installation remain distinct responsibilities.
