Shoring and excavation support

Earth shoring design for Stockton projects

Discuss your project

An excavation beside a Stockton street or occupied building can have limited room for both temporary support and access. Cefali & Associates designs earth shoring around neighboring foundations, street loads, utilities, and the space needed to build the permanent structure.

Our California experience includes shoring around retained seating and tunnels at USC Coliseum in Los Angeles. The entrance stairs were supported over the excavation, addressing an existing structure as part of the support arrangement.

Excavation and construction

Downtown frontage and underground support

Stockton’s Move Downtown initiative studies land use and transportation connections among the Downtown Transit Center, Cabral Station, and San Joaquin Street Station. A development along those routes may have street access and existing infrastructure close to its excavation. The project’s actual asset locations determine the structural constraints.

Tiebacks reach behind the wall and can conflict with utilities or off-site structures. Braces inside the cut avoid that reach but reduce the working area. A shoring concept needs to show the support footprint as well as the finished basement footprint; transportation planning documents do not establish anchor rights or asset-owner approval.

Excavation and construction

New excavation beside a foundation that stays

A basement extension or utility structure may require a cut below a nearby footing. Earth shoring retains the excavation; underpinning, where required, transfers the existing foundation load. The relationship depends on footing geometry and site-specific ground criteria.

At USC Coliseum, historical and retrofit drawings informed Cefali’s support around existing structures. For Stockton renovation work, available foundation records and sections through the proposed cut allow the temporary support scope to be considered before assuming the existing building needs a particular intervention.

Engineering scope

From a support concept to structural details.

A concept for bidding, detailed drawings and calculations, and engineering for construction-stage changes can be separate assignments. The proposal identifies the services included. Geotechnical assessment, water-control design, property rights, and contractor installation remain distinct responsibilities.
