Los Angeles, California: additional tiebacks and walers supplemented soldier piles when petroleum-affected soil removal required a deeper excavation.
A Fresno infill project can place a new foundation beside a building that remains occupied. Even when the finished structure fits the lot, the excavation needs room for support, equipment, and concrete work. Cefali & Associates designs earth shoring for those construction conditions.
Our work includes soldier pile walls, tiebacks, and internal bracing, using the site investigation and proposed excavation stages. At 6th & Bixel in Los Angeles, additional tiebacks and walers supported a cut that became deeper during construction.
Excavation and construction
Fresno’s Downtown plans address the Fulton Corridor and surrounding neighborhoods, including infill and mixed-use development. For a project between existing buildings, the excavation can remove soil that helps support an adjacent footing. Wall movement and the neighboring foundation loads matter as much as the depth of the new basement.
Soldier piles and lagging retain the cut as it deepens. Tiebacks need space behind the wall; internal braces use space inside the excavation. Cefali designs the support around the actual foundation positions and geotechnical criteria rather than assigning a system from the neighborhood.
Excavation and construction
A tower footing, equipment pit, or revised foundation level may extend below the general excavation. That deeper pocket can change pile embedment, anchor forces, and the space needed for bracing, even when the rest of the project remains unchanged.
The 6th & Bixel record documents additional tiebacks and walers after deeper removal of petroleum-affected soil. For a Fresno project with a changed cut, the existing shoring drawings and revised excavation sections help establish what needs structural review. Environmental investigation and soil-removal decisions remain separate from shoring engineering.

Engineering scope
A concept for bidding, detailed drawings and calculations, and engineering for construction-stage changes can be separate assignments. The proposal identifies the services included. Geotechnical assessment, water-control design, property rights, and contractor installation remain distinct responsibilities.
