Hoag Hospital selected a site at the base of its campus hill above Pacific Coast Highway for a new central plant and cogeneration facility. The location required a permanent retaining wall approximately 50 feet high.
Cefali designed a tied-back soldier pile wall with 47 soldier piles and 70 tiebacks. The design had to account for a nearby property line that constrained permanent tiebacks, groundwater, and an existing methane gas well.
The Newport-Inglewood fault runs near the site, so the wall design also included a significant seismic load increment. The team balanced those structural demands with a wall that could be built within the project budget.
