Hoag Memorial Hospital
Hoag Drive: a permanent tied-back soldier pile wall for the hospital central plant site.
Newport Beach, California
Hoag Hospital’s central plant site sits at the base of a campus hill above Pacific Coast Highway. It required a permanent retaining wall about 50 feet high.
Cefali & Associates designed a tied-back soldier pile wall for the site. Groundwater, a nearby property line, an existing methane gas well, and seismic loading all shaped the design.
Local conditions
The permanent wall used 47 soldier piles and 70 tiebacks. The nearby Newport-Inglewood fault added a seismic load increment, while property limits constrained permanent anchors.
Engineering services
Explore the services used on documented local projects and the broader engineering work available for other site conditions.
