Permanent tieback shoring in Newport Beach

Discuss your project

Permanent tiebacks need room in the ground behind a retaining wall as well as a structural connection to it. At Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, a nearby property line constrained the permanent anchors for a wall approximately 50 feet high.

Cefali & Associates designed the wall with 70 tiebacks and 47 soldier piles. The retaining system supported the site selected for the hospital’s central plant and cogeneration facility at the base of the campus hill.

Site conditions

Space behind the property line

At Hoag, the permanent tieback layout had to account for the nearby boundary. A wall line within a site does not establish the room available for anchors beyond it. Structural design and the available property rights remain separate considerations.

Anchor loads and the wall connection

Tiebacks transfer lateral wall loads into the ground behind the retaining system. Hoag’s permanent wall design included a significant seismic load increment because of the nearby Newport-Inglewood fault, in addition to the other demands on the wall.

The ground around the anchors

The design also accounted for groundwater and an existing methane gas well. Anchor geometry and capacity need to be developed with the site’s geotechnical criteria, adjacent facilities, and the support provided by the pile wall.

Engineering scope

From local project to your site

These projects show how excavation depth, neighboring structures, access, and the permanent work can change the support design. Your site needs its own geotechnical criteria and structural design. The contractor determines installation and construction means and methods.
