Shoring and excavation support

Earth shoring design for Irvine projects

Discuss your project

The finished building pad on an Irvine project can hide a more difficult temporary condition: a cut beside an existing road, utility, or retaining wall before the new foundations are built. Cefali & Associates designs earth shoring for that earlier stage.

Relevant work includes Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, where a permanent tied-back soldier pile wall addressed property limits, groundwater, and an existing methane gas well. The wall’s location and constraints are documented rather than assumed for another Orange County site.

Excavation and construction

Building pads and retaining-wall construction

Irvine distinguishes preliminary grading from precise grading for building pads and related construction. Its guidance calls for site approval conditions and construction details within the grading plans. Structural shoring addresses the cut needed to reach those proposed levels, including the period before the permanent retaining structure is complete.

Excavation behind a wall may need additional width for the footing, drainage, and installation equipment. At a boundary, that extra width may be unavailable. A soldier pile wall, tiebacks, or internal bracing can be evaluated against the actual excavation sections and ground criteria, rather than selecting support from the finished elevation alone.

A support wall and a water-control system do different work

Where the site investigation identifies groundwater, the structural wall and water-control approach need compatible assumptions. Water pressure, installation access, and the space occupied by drainage or pumping equipment can affect excavation support. Soldier piles and lagging should not be assumed to create a water cutoff.

Cefali designs structural support using the project’s geotechnical recommendations. Water-control design and discharge arrangements remain separate scopes. The Hoag project is relevant experience with a wall affected by groundwater, not evidence of a uniform groundwater condition across Irvine.

Engineering scope

From a support concept to structural details.

A concept for bidding, detailed drawings and calculations, and engineering for construction-stage changes can be separate assignments. The proposal identifies the services included. Geotechnical assessment, water-control design, property rights, and contractor installation remain distinct responsibilities.
