USC Coliseum
Los Angeles, California: shoring around retained seating and tunnels, including stairs supported over the excavation.
Shoring and excavation support
A below-grade addition and a cut behind a hillside retaining wall create different support conditions on an Anaheim project. The temporary wall needs to function while foundations, drainage, and permanent concrete are still being built. Cefali & Associates provides shoring engineering for that construction stage.
Our documented work at USC Coliseum in Los Angeles included support around retained seating and tunnels, with entrance stairs carried over the excavation. At Vista Monterey in Corona, property limits changed the retaining system along the site.
Excavation and construction
Anaheim Public Works publishes grading and hillside grading submittal resources alongside right-of-way improvement requirements. The project’s actual grades determine where temporary support is needed. A lower wall segment at one end does not establish the demands on a taller segment at the other.
Soldier pile spacing, anchor levels, and transitions between wall types depend on the retained heights, loads, and geotechnical criteria. At Vista Monterey in Corona, soil nail walls changed to soldier piles where nail easements were unavailable. Overall slope stability and structural earth retention remain separate engineering questions.
Excavation and construction
A raker bears on a foundation inside the excavation. Its footprint can overlap the future footing, slab, or equipment route. A cross-lot brace clears the bottom differently but can obstruct lifting or tall equipment. These are construction consequences of the structural arrangement.
Cefali’s temporary shoring design addresses the support stages and interfaces with the permanent work. Preliminary basement sections and a proposed excavation sequence are useful even before the full building package is complete. Contractor installation planning remains distinct from structural design.

Engineering scope
A concept for bidding, detailed drawings and calculations, and engineering for construction-stage changes can be separate assignments. The proposal identifies the services included. Geotechnical assessment, water-control design, property rights, and contractor installation remain distinct responsibilities.
