Shoring and excavation support

Shoring engineering for Salinas construction

Discuss your project

A new foundation or below-grade alteration on a Salinas site can require excavation beside an existing building, even when a full basement is not proposed. Cefali & Associates designs earth shoring for those retained cuts and the construction stages before permanent concrete can take the loads.

Documented California work includes shoring around existing structures at USC Coliseum in Los Angeles and additional tiebacks and walers for a changed excavation at 6th & Bixel, also in Los Angeles.

Excavation and construction

Downtown alterations beside retained structures

Salinas publishes its Downtown Vibrancy Plan through Public Works. For a construction project within an established downtown block, the structural issue can be a localized cut beside an older foundation, a utility structure, or a retained wall. A planning designation does not establish the condition of those structures.

Existing drawings, surveyed positions, and the proposed excavation sections show where new work approaches old support. At USC Coliseum, historical and retrofit drawings informed Cefali’s shoring around seating and tunnels, including entrance stairs supported over the cut. That Los Angeles work illustrates an existing-structure constraint relevant to renovation inquiries.

Excavation and construction

An isolated deeper cut still changes the wall demand

An elevator pit, footing, or revised utility structure can extend below the main excavation. The support beside that pocket must work at the deeper level, including its pile embedment and anchors or braces. Nearby equipment and building loads remain relevant even when the affected length of wall is short.

At 6th & Bixel in Los Angeles, deeper petroleum-affected soil removal required additional tiebacks and walers. For a Salinas project with a revised cut, Cefali can review the changed structural condition using existing support drawings and updated sections. Environmental investigation and contractor excavation methods remain separate scopes.

Engineering scope

From a support concept to structural details.

A concept for bidding, detailed drawings and calculations, and engineering for construction-stage changes can be separate assignments. The proposal identifies the services included. Geotechnical assessment, water-control design, property rights, and contractor installation remain distinct responsibilities.
