Roads, transit, and utilities
Roads, transit structures, and buried utilities can limit drilling locations, allowable movement, and the work area available for construction.
Market
Structural support for tunnels, shafts, and crossings beneath or beside streets, transit facilities, and other public infrastructure.

Underground infrastructure work often takes place in narrow work zones near roads, transit facilities, and utilities that remain in service. Temporary support needs to fit the excavation and the access required for crews, equipment, and materials.
Cefali & Associates has designed support for the Metro 7th Street Station passage and temporary shoring for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing. These projects involved different construction constraints, from excavation beneath an active street to support for bridge and earthwork stages.
Design and construction
Roads, transit structures, and buried utilities can limit drilling locations, allowable movement, and the work area available for construction.
Low overhead clearance, limited equipment reach, and narrow work zones can affect installation methods and connection details.
The support system needs to work at each excavation stage and leave room for the permanent tunnel, crossing, or utility structure.
Our experience
Structural engineering for transportation and infrastructure projects involving tunnels, shafts, earth retention, and constrained access.
For the Metro BLOC Tunnel, a system of beams and columns was installed as excavation advanced toward the station beneath an active roadway and public stairway.
At the wildlife crossing, temporary shoring supported early bridge and abutment work before the southerly earthwork was complete.

Project overview
WALLIS ANNENBERG WILDLIFE CROSSING The National Park Service researched transportation infrastructure's effect on wildlife habitat. The 101 Freeway creates a barrier that isolates animal populations within the Santa Monica Mountains. The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing was developed to restore habitat connectivity across the ten-lane freeway and an adjacent access road at a location where protected lands exist on both sides of the corridor. Images of mountain lions as potential crossers adorn the project website promoting the completion of the crossing. Our firm provided engineering services related to temporary earth shoring design at the base of the site during early construction phases that allowed the bridge and abutments to be constructed ahead of the southerly earthwork. Our services were performed for the General Contractor, C.A. Rasmussen, and the shoring was installed by Malcolm Drilling. The shoring design used Caltrans available beam supply and allowed height to be added to the top of the shoring as grading operations backfilled a slope up to the abutment level.
