Cefali& AssociatesContactAt Vista Monterey in Corona, soldier pile walls retained portions of the development where soil nails could not extend beyond the property line. The pile walls flanked the soil nail section, allowing the retaining system to change with the available easements.
Cefali & Associates designed the top-down retaining walls for Sares Regis Group. For a contractor assessing a similar wall, the pile layout has to fit the excavation and adjoining wall systems as well as the property boundary.
Site conditions
A soldier pile wall does not automatically eliminate every need for space behind or inside the excavation. Pile embedment and any bracing depend on retained height, ground conditions, and nearby loads. Those requirements are established for the particular wall.
At Vista Monterey, soldier pile walls continued the retention on both sides of the nailed wall. Where systems meet, wall geometry and structural details need to account for the change in support.
Both retaining systems received a decorative BoulderScape rock face. The visible finish did not make the underlying systems identical: the pile walls and nailed sections served different portions of the site because of the easement constraints.
