Earth retention engineering in West Hollywood

Discuss your project

An excavation can need different support systems along its perimeter. At the West Hollywood Edition near Sunset and Doheny, below-grade excavation varied from about 9 to 50 feet, with neighboring property and an existing billboard affecting the support.

Cefali & Associates designed the excavation support. Soldier piles and lagging formed the main wall system, most piles used tiebacks, and selected locations needed corner bracing or a secant pile wall.

Site conditions

Earth retention that changes around the site

A changing excavation depth

The Edition’s range of excavation depths meant the design had to address different retained heights. Earth support is developed from those heights and the site’s ground conditions and loads, rather than treating the whole perimeter as one typical wall section.

Corners without tieback easements

Corner bracing supported selected locations to avoid obtaining easements from neighbors. Internal support changes the space occupied inside a cut, so its position needs to fit the excavation and the work to be built within it.

An existing billboard beside the cut

A local secant pile wall with walers and high-capacity tieback anchors supported the excavation at the billboard. That segment used a different wall arrangement from the soldier pile and lagging system elsewhere on the site.

Engineering scope

From local project to your site

These projects show how excavation depth, neighboring structures, access, and the permanent work can change the support design. Your site needs its own geotechnical criteria and structural design. The contractor determines installation and construction means and methods.
