Soldier pile shoring in Inglewood

Discuss your project

Most of the shoring at Intuit Dome in Inglewood used cantilever and tieback-braced soldier piles. Cefali & Associates worked with Malcolm Drilling on the temporary and permanent shoring for an arena whose court sits more than 30 feet below existing grade.

A soldier pile layout has to carry excavation loads while leaving room for installation and the structure being built. Piles may act as cantilevers along one part of a site and need anchors or internal braces elsewhere, depending on the retained height, loads, and available space.

Site conditions

Piles and bracing designed for the work around them

Cantilever and anchored support

Intuit Dome combined cantilever and tieback-braced soldier piles around its below-grade work. The overall support also had to accommodate internal pools, stormwater tanks, a parking structure, and an earthen construction ramp.

Braces above the entrance route

At the entrance tunnel, tieback agreements could not be secured. Cross-lot braces supported the excavation, with their elevation set above truck traffic so the entrance remained usable for construction.

Heavy equipment beside the excavation

The shoring design accounted for roof-truss erection cranes, concrete pumps, and smaller lifting equipment. Equipment positions and loads affect the demands on the wall and its bracing, in addition to the ground being retained.

Engineering scope

From local project to your site

These projects show how excavation depth, neighboring structures, access, and the permanent work can change the support design. Your site needs its own geotechnical criteria and structural design. The contractor determines installation and construction means and methods.
