At Hollywood Burbank Airport's replacement terminal parking structure, Cefali & Associates designed shoring for an excavation that accommodated large foundations, over-excavation requirements, and the construction sequence.
Cefali worked as the design arm of Malcolm Drilling's design-build team for the parking structure. Earth retention had to fit the existing structures and the new site work, including proposed grades, retaining walls, and utility packages.
Site conditions
The shored excavation served a one-level below-grade structure with large foundations. The support layout accounted for over-excavation as well as the planned structure, bringing the actual construction cut into the shoring design.
Existing structures, proposed grades, and new retaining walls were part of the coordination around Cefali's shoring. Those interfaces affect where earth support can fit and how the excavation relates to the surrounding work.
Cefali modeled the shoring in Revit and coordinated tieback conflicts with utility trade partners in Navisworks. The underground space needed for anchors was considered alongside the new utilities being developed for the project.
