Tieback shoring in Culver City

Discuss your project

At 8777 Washington Boulevard in Culver City, Cefali's work included tiebacks and soldier piles. David Cefali's June 7, 2018 update documents those systems during construction of an office development with three subterranean parking levels.

Tiebacks carry shoring loads into the ground behind the wall, leaving space within the excavation for construction. Whether that arrangement fits another project depends on the anchor path, the ground, and the rights available beyond the wall.

Site conditions

Anchor space and support for the excavation

Anchors as part of the wall

The documented 8777 Washington work included both soldier piles and tiebacks. The wall, anchors, and connections form a support system whose layout must address the excavation stages and the loads carried at each stage.

Ground available for anchors

A tieback can extend beyond the property even when the wall sits inside it. Boundaries, agreements, utilities, and nearby foundations can limit anchor length or angle. Engineering design uses the rights established for the project.

Construction space when anchors cannot fit

Where tiebacks are not feasible, other support arrangements may be considered. Internal braces require room inside the excavation, so their position has to be developed with foundation work, access routes, and the construction sequence.

Engineering scope

From local project to your site

These projects show how excavation depth, neighboring structures, access, and the permanent work can change the support design. Your site needs its own geotechnical criteria and structural design. The contractor determines installation and construction means and methods.
